The United Kingdom has imposed new sanctions against Russian banks, tankers, and companies
On August 6, the United Kingdom expanded its sanctions against Russia, adding 19 new items to the list. The restrictions target Russian banks, energy and industrial companies, as well as tankers that transported oil, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas, thereby supporting Russia’s military economy.
Six Russian financial institutions were added to the sanctions list: Ozon Bank, Roseksimbank, Center-Invest Bank, Realist Bank, Bank Stavr, and TelePort Bank.
As a result, their assets have been frozen, they are prohibited from providing trust services, restrictions have been imposed on their executives, and British financial institutions are barred from maintaining correspondent banking relationships with these banks or making payments to, from, or through them.
The British government justified the sanctions by stating that these financial institutions operate in a sector of strategic importance to the Russian government and provide it with economic support.
Separate restrictions were imposed on Northern Engineering, a company operating in the Russian energy sector, and the Indian shipping company Frion Ship Management. According to British authorities, the latter facilitated the transfer of the tanker Arctic Express to Russian control.
Russian companies Metallokomplekt, Nikom, Promsiz, and Technolux were also targeted by the sanctions. London stated that these companies supplied goods or technologies that could have facilitated Russia’s actions against Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence.
Alexander Zhdanov, the owner of the Russian chemical company Siltron, was added to the list. His assets are subject to freezing, and he is also barred from entering the United Kingdom and holding executive positions in British companies.
The sanctions also cover six vessels. In particular, restrictions were imposed on the LNG tanker Arctic Express, which transported liquefied natural gas of Russian origin to third countries.
The list also includes the oil tankers Perseas, Torvian, Asteras, Visund, and Zenturo. According to the British government, these vessels were transporting Russian oil or petroleum products from Russia to other countries.
The sanctions prohibit the operation and chartering of these vessels, their entry into British ports, their registration in the United Kingdom, as well as the provision of technical, financial, brokerage, insurance, and other services related to their activities. British authorities have also been granted the right to detain such vessels and issue navigation orders to them.
In total, the sanctions update of August 6 covered 12 legal entities, one individual, and six vessels. All restrictions took effect on the day the relevant entries were added to the UK sanctions list.
