Mádyar blamed the Orbán government for the current energy crisis in Hungary
Hungary’s current Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, blamed Viktor Orbán’s previous government for the current energy crisis, emphasizing the complete lack of diversification of energy sources in case of disruptions at the Paks Nuclear Power Plant.
According to the official, Viktor Orbán’s team had been well aware of the critical state of Hungary’s power grid since 2022. Nevertheless, the authorities overloaded the grid with high energy demand to serve large investors—a demand that effectively equaled the output of the entire Paks Nuclear Power Plant—without creating additional generation capacity.
Furthermore, the rapid expansion of solar power generation took place without upgrading the power grids or creating reserves, while the construction of wind farms was deliberately obstructed. The situation is further complicated by the fact that Hungary’s only nuclear power plant, Paks, has long been on the verge of shutdown due to the critical low water levels in the Danube.

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that the country is experiencing a critical period in the energy sector due to a record drop in the water level of the Danube. The last operational reactor unit at the country’s only nuclear power plant, Paks, is at risk of being forced to shut down, as the river level near the plant has dropped to minus 133 cm, with the critical threshold at minus 134 cm.
In Budapest, authorities have decided to limit the speed of the metro and trams to reduce electricity consumption. A new schedule will be implemented on city transit lines, under which metro cars and trams will accelerate more slowly.
