Earlier, media outlets reported that tensions had arisen between Trump and Hegset over the reduction of U.S. weapons stockpiles.
The president called the reports of a conflict false. “Fake news” is spreading “false and completely baseless rumors,” Trump wrote.

Prior to the president’s statement, U.S. media outlets reported on allegedly serious questions directed at Hegset regarding the status of U.S. ammunition stockpiles. According to media reports, last week at Camp David, Trump demanded an explanation from the defense secretary regarding the situation with weapons stockpiles.
The reports suggested that the president believed he might have been misled about the extent of the ammunition shortage. According to the media, this issue could affect the U.S. military’s ability to conduct combat operations in a conflict with Iran. In other words, the issue went beyond a mere internal dispute between Trump and Hegset. It raised the question of how prepared the U.S. is to sustain a prolonged military operation if stocks of certain types of ammunition are dwindling.
Trump said he is satisfied with Hegset
Despite reports of possible disagreements, Trump stated that he fully supports the defense secretary. The president emphasized that he is satisfied with Hegset’s work and considers his performance to be successful. “I am extremely satisfied with the work Pete Hegset is doing,” Trump said.
He also mentioned U.S. military operations and stated that they had been successful. “Everything has gone extremely well, including our operation in Venezuela (...) The same goes for Iran, where the country was devastated to prevent it from ever acquiring nuclear weapons,” the U.S. president wrote.
Trump also stated that Hegset enjoys significant support and respect among the military. According to him, the defense secretary is “highly respected in military circles.” In this way, Trump publicly dismissed reports of a conflict with Hegset and sought to put an end to speculation about possible problems between the president and the head of the Pentagon.
At the same time, reports on the state of U.S. ammunition stocks emerged amid a growing military burden on the United States. According to media reports, it was precisely this issue that prompted Trump’s discussions with Hegset. Trump stated his position on August 6 on the social media platform Truth Social.
The first Trump-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile cruiser, named the USS Defiant, could become the most expensive warship in history. Its cost is estimated at $23.4 billion, exceeding the price of a Gerald R. Ford-class supercarrier.
