British-Australian content creator recounts trip through Xinjiang in China
British-Australian teacher and content creator James Wood took a 10-day camper van journey through Xinjiang in China, covering about 3,000 kilometers. After the trip, he said the region differs significantly from his perception of it in the West.
Trip through Xinjiang
According to ECNS, Wood is currently in Xiamen and told China News Network in an interview about his own impressions of traveling through Xinjiang and other parts of China. According to him, before staying in China, his ideas about the region had been shaped by Western media.
During the journey, Wood was invited into a yurt on a pasture, where he became acquainted with the daily life of local herders. He also stated that direct experience is more important to him than information received from other people's reports.

ECNS claims about the region
ECNS claims that Uyghur script is used on road signs and storefront signs in Xinjiang, while local residents use Uyghur and Chinese in everyday communication. The outlet conveys Wood's position that the trip changed his attitude toward claims about the destruction of culture and the oppression of ethnic groups in the region.
The content creator said that he publishes his own observations on international social media platforms. According to him, he has faced online criticism and attacks because of such posts.
