CANAL+ and LALIGA sign anti-piracy agreement in nearly 50 countries — Premium Times Nigeria
CANAL+ and the Spanish football league LALIGA have signed an agreement to combat the illegal distribution of sports content, covering nearly 50 countries in Europe, sub-Saharan Africa and Haiti. The agreement, announced in Paris and Madrid, was reported by Premium Times Nigeria.
Countering illegal broadcasts
As part of the partnership, CANAL+ and LALIGA will exchange data, coordinate enforcement strategies and accelerate action against networks that illegally distribute sports broadcasts in different countries.
The parties plan to combine technological solutions, information-gathering and analysis capabilities, and enforcement experience to protect the commercial value of sports broadcasting rights.
Positions of the parties
LALIGA President Javier Tebas said that piracy has become one of the biggest challenges for the future of sport and requires closer cooperation between rights holders and broadcasters. According to him, combining technological and operational capabilities should help protect the value of competitions, as well as the investments of broadcasters and football clubs.

CANAL+ CEO Maxime Saada described the scale of the partnership as evidence of the strategic importance of combating the illegal distribution of content for the group. He also noted that participants in the sports, audiovisual and creative industries should join efforts to counter piracy.
Impact on sports financing
CANAL+ and LALIGA said that illegal broadcasts reduce revenues that support professional and grassroots sport. According to them, this also affects investment in youth academies, clubs, audiovisual content production and other areas dependent on sports media broadcasting rights.
The agreement is intended to ensure faster detection of illegal services and better coordination of measures in the countries covered by the partnership.
