During a state dinner at the White House, King Charles III of the United Kingdom playfully teased U.S. President Donald Trump by referencing his statements about America’s role in world history.

In his speech, the British monarch responded to Trump’s remark that without the U.S., Europeans “would be speaking German.” In response, Charles III noted that without Britain, Americans might be speaking French.
He also mentioned the burning of the White House in 1814, joking that it was a “British attempt at remodeling” the U.S. president’s residence.
French President Emmanuel Macron picked up on this joke on social media, replying: “That would be brilliant!”
