Some Republican senators have sharply criticized the memorandum signed between the U.S. and Iran, which outlines the terms for ending the war.

Lawmakers have expressed serious concerns that the agreement weakens Washington’s position on the international stage and strengthens Tehran’s position.

Within 24 hours of the two countries signing the framework agreement, criticism began to mount in the Senate regarding the concessions agreed to by the U.S. side.

Representatives of the party’s conservative wing believe that the terms set forth do not serve national security interests.

Opponents of the document are demanding a detailed review of all provisions of the agreement before the final version is signed.

Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy, who is soon to leave office, expressed extreme skepticism about the results of the diplomatic process. The politician summarized the terms of the agreement by saying that “Iran is getting stronger, and we are getting weaker.”

Texas Senator John Cornyn expressed solidarity with his colleague, openly stating that he was “concerned about everything” he had heard regarding the signed document.

Republican Lisa Murkowski also commented on the signed memorandum, noting that it would be difficult to describe the agreement as one that leaves Iran at a disadvantage and the U.S. at an advantage.

She highlighted the high price that has already been paid during the prolonged standoff.

“A lot of money has been spent, lives have been lost, but Iran remains in almost the same position as before,” she noted.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz offered an even harsher assessment of the events, calling the financial component of the agreements completely unjustified.

He believes that such a move could have catastrophic consequences for stability throughout the Middle East.

“History shows that giving billions of dollars to theocratic fanatics who want to kill us is an extremely bad idea, and it seems, unfortunately, that the president is receiving bad advice on this deal,” said Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

As CNN notes, signals from Republican senators contain clear hints that, without significant changes, the final agreement with Iran could be blocked.

Since the terms of the document are to be agreed upon within the next 60 days based on a memorandum of understanding, it risks failing to receive congressional approval.

Some members of Congress have expressed doubts that a final agreement will be reached at all, and point out that this could leave Trump and the party in “limbo” for a long time and affect the results of the midterm congressional elections.

One Republican senator, who commented on the situation anonymously, even spoke of “despair” among his fellow party members over the administration’s diplomatic course.

CNN reported this, citing its own sources in high-level U.S. political circles.
