The Czech Republic is preparing helicopters to defend Poland's airspace

The Czech Republic plans to deploy its AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters to help defend Poland’s airspace and NATO’s eastern flank. The primary focus is on countering low-flying targets, particularly Shahed-type drones. NATO is stepping up joint efforts amid growing airborne threats.

The Czech Republic has decided to bolster Poland’s air defense by deploying its AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters there, which are to operate as part of a joint NATO operation. The mission is set to begin as early as June, and its primary objective will be to protect the airspace and monitor the Alliance’s eastern borders, where threats from drones are being detected with increasing frequency.

The main focus of this operation is combating low-flying targets, which are difficult to detect with traditional air defense systems. This includes Russian “Shahed”-type kamikaze drones and other similar devices that are actively used in modern conflicts. The Czech Ministry of Defense emphasizes that the unit has already completed the necessary training and certification according to NATO standards, allowing it to operate as part of international missions. “The unit has been evaluated in accordance with the standardized NATO TACEVAL procedure,” according to official documents from the Czech Ministry of Defense.

Analysts note that the deployment of such helicopters is not merely a show of support but a tangible strengthening of the response to air threats. The AH-1Z Viper can be equipped with high-precision APKWS missiles, which are already in use in Ukraine, as well as a 20-mm cannon and AIM-9 air-to-air missiles, although their use against low-cost drones is considered economically inefficient.

Separately, experts emphasize that helicopters are well-suited for combating precisely slow and low-flying targets, which often penetrate traditional air defense systems. In addition, the Czech Republic has been actively training crews to counter drones since 2025, integrating relevant training programs.

Interestingly, the same AH-1Z Viper helicopters are already featured in Ukrainian defense plans—Ukraine is also purchasing these aircraft alongside the UH-1Y Venom transport helicopters. At the same time, a subsidiary, Bell Textron Ukraine, has been established in the country to handle maintenance and potential assembly of the equipment.

In effect, the Czech Republic is becoming another participant in the practical strengthening of NATO’s eastern flank air defense, and this new operation demonstrates that the Alliance is increasingly seeking ways to counter modern threats, where drones play a key role.

The Czech Republic is considering the sale of Explosia, a state-owned manufacturer of explosives and ammunition, and the proceeds could be directed toward defense investments.
