Marriage numbers in China increased to 6.76 million in 2025
The Ministry of Civil Affairs of China released data on marriage registrations for 2025. The country saw 6.763 million new couples register their marriage, which is 657 thousand, or 11%, more than the previous year.

Meanwhile, the number of divorces decreased to 2.743 million, down by 770 thousand compared to 2024. Demographers attribute the rise in marriages to the May decision last year to abolish the mandatory hukou registration system. Now couples can marry anywhere in the country, not only at their place of official registration as before.
This policy is expected to temporarily boost birth rates and help stabilize China’s demographic situation.
