Cyprus Mail: parents of boy who died in Cyprus remanded in custody for five days
As Cyprus Mail reports, the parents of a three-year-old boy who died after falling from a sixth-floor apartment in Cyprus have been remanded in custody for five days. Police are investigating the case as causing death through negligence.
According to the publication, the boy fell on Saturday evening from the apartment where his family lived. Both parents were in the home at the time of the tragedy, so they are being treated as suspects in the investigation.

In an editorial column, Cyprus Mail questioned the necessity of holding the parents in custody for five days. The publication noted that police requested this preventive measure and the court granted the request.
The column's authors asked whether police really needed five days to investigate the tragedy and whether there was a risk that the suspects could influence witnesses. At the same time, this is the editorial board's assessment, not a conclusion of the investigation or the court.

In mid-July, police also secured an eight-day remand in custody for a 37-year-old British citizen after his three-year-old son fell from an open window near an elevator on the fourth floor of a hotel in the Paphos district.
According to Cyprus Mail, the father was sent for toxicology tests to determine whether he was intoxicated at the time of the incident. He is due to appear in court on Thursday, although his lawyer asked the attorney general to suspend the prosecution.
The Cyprus Mail editorial board compared the cases and criticized the police approach toward parents who lost their children. The circumstances of both tragedies are under investigation.
