Denmark and the U.S. may sign an agreement on Greenland by the end of the year

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated that negotiations between Denmark, Greenland, and the United States to resolve the dispute over Greenland’s status could result in an agreement by the end of the year.

According to Rasmussen, a special negotiating group has been working since January to discuss a diplomatic resolution to Greenland’s status, the tensions that arose following U.S. President Donald Trump’s statements regarding possible control over the island, and the format of future cooperation between the parties.

The minister noted that several more meetings are needed to reach a final outcome, but an agreement could be reached by the end of the year, though not before summer.

He also emphasized that the U.S. officials involved in the process are close to Donald Trump and have a political mandate to negotiate.

Greenland is an autonomous territory within Denmark and is of strategic importance due to its geographical location in the Arctic. The question of its status periodically becomes a source of international political debate, particularly between Copenhagen and Washington.

Earlier, the Greenlandic government reported that some progress had been made in negotiations with the United States regarding the island’s future. At the same time, officials in Copenhagen and Nuuk emphasized that Greenland is not for sale and remains subject to the political decisions of the self-governing territory.

During closed-door talks, Trump sought nearly complete control over Greenland.

Trumppointed to the catastrophic consequences of a mistake in choosing a successor—Fortune.
