In Poland, two tourists from Germany were fined after taking photos of an area near the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad Oblast. The incident occurred near the town of Węgorzewo.
According to Polish authorities, the foreigners violated the rules governing their presence in the border zone, where special restrictions apply.
Law enforcement officials reminded the public that in certain sections of the Polish-Russian border, it is prohibited to take photographs or film border infrastructure. Violating these rules may result in a fine or other administrative penalties.
According to the Border Guard, the incident was captured by surveillance cameras. The two tourists were riding bicycles in the border zone and ignored a road sign prohibiting traffic in that section.
According to border guards, the Germans wanted to get a closer look at the European Union’s external border. In addition, one of the tourists was taking photographs of the territory on the other side of the border.
For violating traffic rules, each tourist was fined 500 zlotys. The man was additionally fined 200 zlotys for photographing the neighboring side of the border. The total amount of the fines was 1,200 zlotys.
The Polish Border Guard reminded the public that special rules apply in the border zone, including a ban on entering certain areas and taking photographs of the neighboring country’s territory.
