An AfD lawmaker in St. Petersburg called for the resumption of the Nord Stream project
Markus Fronmaier, a representative of the far-right German party AfD, held a meeting in St. Petersburg with the head of Gazprom and a close associate of Putin. During the talks, he publicly advocated for the possible resumption of operations on the Nord Stream gas pipeline.
Fronmaier is the deputy leader of the AfD faction in the Bundestag and the party’s foreign policy spokesperson. In St. Petersburg, he met with two influential figures from Putin’s inner circle:
- Alexey Miller, head of Gazprom;
- Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund and the president’s special envoy.
The meeting with Miller was initiated by the German side, Gazprom reported.
“We look forward to a shared FUTURE together with the AfD—Germany’s most popular party,” Dmitriev wrote on X after the meeting.
The main topic was the restoration of the Nord Stream gas pipeline and the resumption of Russian gas supplies to Germany.
“All options must be back on the table, including the restart of Nord Stream. Our task is to unconditionally put Germany’s national interests at the center,” Frommayer wrote after the meeting.
“Economic cooperation” and “the resumption of the Russia–Germany–U.S. business dialogue” were also discussed.
The resumption of the Nord Stream pipeline has been the AfD’s official position since last year’s federal elections. The party also opposes sanctions against Russia and arms supplies to Ukraine.
This is reported in an article by the Financial Times.
As a reminder, the “Nord Stream” pipeline could resume operations with U.S. participation and bypassing the EU.
