Lawmaker Jin Jong-oh to ask court to suspend party disciplinary decision
South Korean lawmaker Jin Jong-oh said he would ask a court to suspend the effect of a disciplinary decision under which his membership in the opposition People Power Party was suspended for two years. The Korea Herald reports.
Reason for the disciplinary decision
The People Power Party's ethics committee made the decision because Jin supported independent candidate Han Dong-hoon during a parliamentary by-election in the southeastern city of Busan. This occurred ahead of the June 3 local elections, although the party had fielded its own candidate in the district.

The lawmaker's position
In a Facebook post, Jin Jong-oh said he wants to obtain a legal assessment of whether the grounds for the disciplinary measure were sufficiently supported by objective facts and evidence. He also intends to determine whether party rules provide for punishment for such actions, whether the procedure was lawful and fair, and whether the two-year suspension of membership is proportionate and justified.
Separately, the lawmaker was subject to disciplinary action over remarks widely considered insensitive toward the victim in the Busan roundhouse-kick assault case. He made the comments during a parliamentary session last month.
