Yiŋiya Guyula, a member of the Northern Territory Parliament, has resigned
Yiŋiya Guyula, an independent member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, immediately resigned as the representative for the Mulka district.
According to ABC News Australia, he cited the Country Liberal Party (CLP) government’s introduction of legislation that, in his view, dehumanizes, oppresses, and destroys Indigenous communities as one of the factors behind his decision.

In his statement, Guyula noted that the decision to resign was not an easy one, but he considered it necessary because he could no longer work with a government that, in his view, is unwilling to listen and build partnerships. According to the politician, his people had sent him to collaborate with the government; however, he claims that the authorities instead took the position that they themselves knew the community’s needs better.
Guyula also stated that Indigenous communities are being turned into pawns in a political struggle without any genuine intention to collaborate with them to bring about positive change. He was first elected as an independent representative in 2016 from the Nhlulumbai district, which is now called Mulka. The politician’s resignation will trigger a special election in the district, though the date of the election has not yet been announced.
