In England, three illegal landfills will be cleaned up at taxpayers' expense
In England, three illegal landfills—in Bradford, Runnymede, and on the Isle of Sheppy—are being cleaned up at taxpayers’ expense. According to The Guardian World, a total of about 22,000 metric tons of illegally dumped waste has accumulated at these sites.
These locations will be the next to be addressed as part of the government’s program to clear areas of illegal dumps. Downing Street stated that they were selected due to their scale, the risks to surrounding communities, the environmental damage, and links to organized crime.
Andy Burnham stated that the government will also step up efforts to prevent illegal waste dumping. Fines for people who illegally dump waste or fail to dispose of it properly are set to increase from 300 to 5,000 pounds sterling. Stricter penalties, including imprisonment, are already in place for more serious violations.

To detect illegal waste dumping as it occurs, authorities plan to use drones equipped with artificial intelligence. A total of 33 drones will be outfitted with LiDAR technology, which enables the creation of detailed maps of illegal dumpsites.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, as part of an initial campaign against illegal dumps, the agency conducted 42 site visits, suspended or revoked 17 permits, and launched more than 30 criminal investigations. In West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester, mayors and local council leaders will be involved in coordinating the work of councils, the police, regulators, and other law enforcement agencies.
According to The Guardian, hundreds of illegal dumps have been reported in England. A BBC investigation also uncovered 11 particularly large sites that together contain more than 20,000 metric tons of waste.
