Vondee calls for changes to English teaching in Ghana — MyJoyOnline
In Ghana, National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament David Vondee called for a review of English language teaching methods after students' results in the 2026 WASSCE worsened. MyJoyOnline reports.
The pass rate in the English language exam fell from 69% in 2025 to 62.40% in 2026. Vondee, who represents the Twifo-Atti-Morkwa constituency, said the issue should be addressed not only at the secondary school level but also in basic education.
Basic preparation
According to the MP, students who did not receive a strong foundation in English at the basic education level will find it difficult to overcome these gaps in secondary school. He also questioned why some private basic schools appear to perform better than public ones, even though trained teachers work in the public system.

Vondee proposed paying attention to the education system, the quality of teaching, school operating mechanisms, and the use of technology in public basic schools.
Technology and social media
The MP stressed the need to change the methodology and approaches to teaching English. In his view, the changes should include the use of technology and take into account that students use social media.
He also called for broader steps to develop listening, reading, and text comprehension skills from the basic education level. Improving English results, he said, will require a combination of more effective teaching methods, proper use of technology, awareness-raising efforts, and support for students in using social media without harming language development.
