1,200 designers submitted entries to the competition for new euro banknotes
In Estonia, designer Anne Pikov, who represented the country on the jury for the preliminary selection of designs for new euro banknotes, said that proposals from 1,200 designers from across Europe had been submitted to the competition. The European Central Bank plans to update the visual design of the banknotes because new security features have emerged over more than 20 years, while paper and inks have also improved, ERR News reports.
Two design themes
Two themes were defined for the competition entries: “European culture” and “Birds and rivers.” In other respects, participants had freedom in creating their concepts. According to Pikov, the jury included not only designers but also psychologists and neurobiologists.
During the selection process, discussions covered, among other things, the size of the numbers on the banknotes, the intensity of colors, and how the people depicted should represent certain fields of activity. Pikov noted that the previous banknotes featured images of objects, whereas the new designs are expected to feature people, their skills and achievements.

Voting and cash
The public can also express its preferences regarding the proposed directions. Based on the results of this vote, the ECB will make its final decision. Five designers from Estonia took part in the competition, but they did not reach the final selection.
For bird images, the condition was that European species migrating between European countries had to be used. Under the rivers theme, designers could draw on images of rapids, puddles, rain or water crystals. According to Pikov, half of all payments in Europe are still made with banknotes. The current banknotes will remain in circulation, while the new designs will be used alongside them.
