A potentially hazardous asteroid 750 meters wide is approaching Earth
On Sunday, August 9, the potentially hazardous asteroid 173561 (2000 YV137) will fly past Earth. Scientists estimate its size to be about 750 meters, which places it in the category of large near-Earth objects.
According to NASA, the celestial object is 756 meters long. The distance between the asteroid and Earth will be slightly more than 5 million km.
If an asteroid approaches Earth to within less than 7.5 million km and is larger than 150 m, NASA classifies it as a “potentially hazardous object.”
Asteroid 173561 (2000 YV137) meets both criteria.
