U.S. drones were stranded at sea due to a Starlink outage

U.S. drones were stranded at sea due to a Starlink outage

A critical failure in the Starlink system temporarily left U.S. naval drones without communication or control, causing some of the equipment to effectively become stranded in the ocean during testing. The incident, reported by Reuters, has once again raised questions about the U.S. military’s reliance on a single satellite system, which could become a vulnerability in the event of a potential conflict.

In the U.S., there is growing concern about the risks posed by the military’s near-total reliance on the Starlink satellite network, as it is the backbone of communication, reconnaissance, and drone control systems.

During a major technical failure last year during U.S. Navy sea drone tests, a signal transmission failure occurred, and about two dozen unmanned vehicles lost control and drifted off the coast of California for an hour. The Pentagon views this incident as a warning sign, as naval drones are already considered one of the key elements of a future confrontation with China.

It is separately noted that the problem lies not only in technical failures but also in structural dependence on SpaceX, which effectively controls a significant portion of space launches and satellite infrastructure, creating a monopoly risk for the U.S. defense sector.

Journalists also cite the Ukrainian experience, where the military has repeatedly faced limitations or disruptions in Starlink’s operation in occupied territories, complicating operations and coordination among units.

Some experts, however, believe that despite the risks, there is currently no alternative to Starlink, as the system remains the most accessible and widely used. As Hudson Institute analyst Brian Clark noted, the military is forced to accept these vulnerabilities because of the technology’s advantages: “You accept these vulnerabilities because of the benefits you get from the ubiquity they provide.”

U.S. President Donald Trump also stated that negotiations with Iran are progressing well. According to him, “something very positive will happen” in the near future.

U.S. President Donald Trump also stated that the first meeting in decades between the leaders of Israel and Lebanon could take place as early as April 17. According to him, the U.S. is acting as a mediator in these negotiations.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hagset also stated that American troops in the Middle East are ready to resume combat operations if Iran does not agree to a peace deal.

As a result of the Israeli strike, the Qasimiyeh Bridge, which connected southern and northern Lebanon, was severely damaged. This has complicated the delivery of humanitarian aid and effectively cut off part of the population.

The U.S. stated that it would use force against ships attempting to circumvent the blockade of Iran.

Israel stated that it had eliminated two armed individuals in the northern part of the Gaza Strip.

At least two Iranian tankers managed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, likely using a detour route despite U.S. surveillance.
