ECOWAS extends Baba Kamara’s mandate — MyJoyOnline

In Ghana, Ghanaian diplomat and former national security adviser Baba Issifu Kamara has turned 70. In an article dedicated to him, MyJoyOnline reports that ECOWAS has extended his term as special envoy for counterterrorism.

According to the publication, Kamara was appointed to the post in July 2023 by a decision of the heads of state and government of the Economic Community of West African States. The outlet also notes that his experience in public service in Ghana and West Africa spans more than four decades.

Career in Ghana and ECOWAS

Kamara was a senior adviser to the president and served as Ghana’s national security adviser from 2013 to 2017. Earlier, he worked as Ghana’s high commissioner to Nigeria, with concurrent accreditation to Cameroon, Chad, and São Tomé and Príncipe.

From 2009 to 2012, the diplomat was Ghana’s permanent representative to the ECOWAS Commission. According to MyJoyOnline, he also served as deputy head of the ECOWAS mission observing Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election and took part in election monitoring in Togo and Côte d’Ivoire.

Mission in Guinea-Bissau

Ahead of Guinea-Bissau’s general elections scheduled for November 23, 2025, ECOWAS appointed Kamara head of the election observation mission, the article says. The author of the publication also claims that during the November political unrest in Bissau, Kamara remained in the country until an ASKY Airlines charter flight was arranged to evacuate more than 130 ECOWAS observers.
