The National Rally, led by the pro-Russian Le Pen, will form a parliamentary group in the French Senate for the first time

On September 27, the National Rally party and its right-wing allies won enough seats to form their own caucus in the upper house of the French parliament for the first time. In total, they won 14 seats in the Senate, and party leader Marine Le Pen called the result a “historic victory.”

“The far-right National Rally party” Marine Le Pen and her allies won enough seats in the French Senate on Sunday to form a parliamentary group in the upper house for the first time in the party’s history, securing 14 of the 348 seats.”

Details: Thus, “National Rally” surpassed the 10-seat threshold required to form a parliamentary group in the Senate—the upper house of the French parliament—for the first time.

After the results were announced, the party’s former leader, Marine Le Pen—who is suspected of having ties to the Kremlin—posted on social media platform X about the party’s “historic victory.”

The head of the “National Rally,” Jordan Bardella, stated that he would form a parliamentary group together with his ally—the “Union of the Right for the Republic,” which won two seats in the Senate.

In addition, for the first time in history, the far-left party “Unbowed France” won a seat in the upper house. However, according to preliminary results, the right, the center, and the left-wing Socialists will remain the three main political forces in the Senate.

As France 24 notes, half of the upper house is elected by indirect vote every three years, and senators serve six-year terms.
