Georgia's former prosecutor general established a unit in Russia to wage war against Ukraine
Otar Romanov-Partskhaladze, the former Prosecutor General of Georgia, who is linked to the Georgian government, has formed an international “volunteer” unit called “St. George’s” in Russia. It was created to participate in the war against Ukraine.
The former Georgian official, who is subject to sanctions by the U.S., the U.K., and Ukraine, stated that he voluntarily decided to fight on the side of Russia in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
Romanov-Partskhaladze will lead his newly formed “St. George” unit.
He clarified that the unit’s name is linked to the Treaty of Georgievsk of 1783, under which the Georgian Kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti came under the protectorate of the Russian Empire.
Otar Partskhaladze served as Georgia’s prosecutor general from November through December 2013. In 2023, the U.S. imposed sanctions against him, citing “the strengthening of Russian influence in Georgia.” According to media reports, while living in Moscow and maintaining ties with the Russian political elite, he continues to maintain close contacts with the “Georgian Dream” government in Tbilisi.
