Former Governor Guerrero is accused in the case of the disappearance of 43 students
Ángel Aguirre, the former governor of the Mexican state of Guerrero, has been charged in connection with the 2014 disappearance of 43 students from a teachers’ college in Ayucapán. A judge ruled that Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office had provided sufficient evidence to formally charge Aguirre with forced disappearance and ordered him to remain in custody at a maximum-security prison pending trial, according to The Guardian World.
Aguirre, who was arrested last week, is also charged with obstruction of justice. According to the prosecution, he ordered the destruction of surveillance camera footage that could have helped establish the circumstances surrounding the students’ disappearance on the night of September 25–26, 2014.
The former official’s attorney, Guillermo Baradas, denied his client’s guilt. According to him, the defense has submitted evidence showing that Ángel Aguirre was attending a high-level meeting at the time he was allegedly handed the video recordings.

This is the most significant development in the Ayucapana case since the 2022 arrest of Jesús Murillo Karam, who was Mexico’s attorney general at the time of the students’ abduction. The remains have been identified for only three of the 43 missing students, and the fate of the other 40 remains unknown.
That night, students from the Raúl Isidro Burgos Teachers’ College in the town of Ayucapapa hijacked several buses in the city of Iguala to travel to Mexico City for a protest. Before leaving Iguala, they were attacked by a local criminal gang acting in collusion with the municipal police. A long-running international investigation has established the involvement of federal forces—both police and military—who either directly participated in the events or failed to intervene when the students were taken away.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated that she is committed to uncovering all the circumstances of the case and last year established a task force to investigate it.
