Former British minister says he is ready to replace Starmer
Former UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting has said he is ready to run for the leadership of the Labour Party and the position of prime minister if the party calls for a leadership election.
This was reported by Reuters.
The statement came a few days after Strutting resigned from the government. He also publicly called on current Prime Minister Keir Starmer to set a clear timeline for his departure from office.
“We need a real election with the best candidates, and I will run,” Stritting said during a conference of the Progress group, which represents the modernizing wing of the Labour Party.
During his speech, the politician also sharply criticized Brexit, calling Britain’s exit from the European Union a “catastrophic mistake.” According to him, the country should strive to return to the EU.
“Britain’s future lies in Europe, and one day it will return to the European Union,” he said.
Keir Starmer had previously opposed Brexit, but after becoming prime minister, he ruled out the possibility of the country returning to the European Union or making significant concessions on migration issues.
Earlier, Starmer noted growing tensions in relations with the U.S.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, during which they discussed increasing pressure on the aggressor. The leaders paid particular attention to the fight against Russia’s shadow fleet and London’s contributions to the PURL program to strengthen the Ukrainian army.
