Former Argentine President Fernández de Kirchner asks UN to review conviction — Anadolu Agency
Former Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has appealed to the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Committee to review her conviction in a corruption case. She is under house arrest in Buenos Aires following a sentence imposed in 2025 of six years in prison and a lifetime ban on holding public office.
Petition to the UN committee
The politician's defense team submitted an additional petition to the committee, asking it to suspend the political ban. Her lawyers argue that her fundamental rights were violated during the trial, Anadolu Agency reports.
The UN Human Rights Committee consists of 18 independent experts and monitors compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Its decisions are not legally binding, but they carry significant political weight and may be used in domestic legal proceedings.

Impact on election participation
The lifetime ban on holding public office currently prevents Fernández de Kirchner from running in the presidential election scheduled for October 2027. If she is allowed to take part in the race, the former president would first need to secure the Peronists' nomination.
Fernández de Kirchner was president of Argentina from 2007 to 2015 and served as vice president from 2019 to 2023. According to polls, her level of support is comparable to that of incumbent President Javier Milei.
