Former Senator Manchin criticizes Texas AG Paxton — The Hill

Former U.S. Senator Joe Manchin criticized Texas Attorney General and Senate candidate Ken Paxton. On NewsNation's The Hill Sunday program, he said voters should not support Paxton because, in his view, he lacks character, The Hill reports.

Manchin's statement

Host Chris Stirewalt asked Manchin about Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico. The former senator replied that he did not know Talarico and was disappointed by some of his statements.

At the same time, Manchin said that if character matters, Paxton cannot be voted for because, in his view, he does not have it. He did not specify which particular traits or actions of Paxton's he meant.

The race in Texas

Paxton previously faced impeachment proceedings in the Texas House of Representatives over corruption allegations. Three years ago, the Texas Senate acquitted him.

According to a recent NBC 5 Dallas/Telemundo Station Group poll, Talarico was supported by 46% of registered voters, while Paxton received 43%. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the Texas Senate race as one in which the candidates' chances are roughly equal. The Hill reported that it had sought comment from Paxton's campaign.
