Qatar’s Emir Tamim calls for talks with Iran at UN — Euronews

Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, United States, called for the opportunity for a diplomatic settlement with Iran not to be lost and for navigation through the Strait of Hormuz to be restored. He said that the Persian Gulf countries have entered one of the most dangerous phases in their recent history.

As Euronews reports, the Qatari emir described the war with Iran as the result of years of postponing diplomatic decisions. He proposed creating a regional collective security system based on state sovereignty, non-interference and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

According to Tamim, a lasting agreement with Tehran must ensure the security of the entire region, including Iran. The emir said that Qatar, which he called a reliable mediator, is making every possible effort to resolve the regional conflict diplomatically.

Calls regarding the Strait of Hormuz

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also spoke in favor of preserving freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. He said that Turkey is working with other countries to end hostilities in the Persian Gulf and warned that the spread of the war to neighboring states would benefit no one.

Erdoğan called on UN member states to increase pressure on Israel over Gaza and on countries that have not recognized Palestine to reconsider their position. During his speech, the Israeli delegation left the hall. The Turkish president also repeated his call for reform of the UN Security Council, stating that decisions concerning more than 190 states should not depend on the body’s five permanent members.

Jordan’s position

King Abdullah II of Jordan said that international inaction toward Israel is a political choice, not the result of a lack of tools. He compared the response to Israel’s actions with the use of sanctions, asset freezes, embargoes and diplomatic isolation in other conflicts.

The Jordanian monarch accused Israel of seizing land, expanding settlements and condoning settler violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. He also said that the war with Iran harms trade and investment and causes rising energy and food costs worldwide.
