Moldova's power grid suffered an emergency blackout as a result of attacks on Ukraine

The Russian aggressor’s massive attack on the Ukrainian power grid, which took place on the evening of March 23, caused a serious disruption in the power grid of neighboring Moldova.

NewsMaker reports this.

As a result of the shelling, the strategically important Isaccha-Vulcanesti cross-border power line ceased operations.

This line is a key link directly connecting the power systems of Moldova and Romania. According to the operator Moldelectrica, the emergency outage was recorded around 7:00 p.m. local time.

Moldova’s National Crisis Management Center confirmed that there are high risks to regional stability.

“Due to shelling of critical infrastructure in Ukraine, there is a risk of damage to the Isaccea-Vulcanesti line, which is a vital component of the regional and national power grid,” the agency noted.

The situation in southern Ukraine remained tense throughout the night of March 24. Russian strike drones attacked Odesa, leading to localized power outages in several districts of the regional capital.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu officially confirmed that the aggressor country’s strikes on Ukrainian targets have a direct negative impact on her country.

She emphasized the danger of energy blackmail and the physical destruction of infrastructure.

“Overnight, the strikes disrupted Moldova’s key energy connection with Europe. Alternative routes have already been established, but the situation remains unstable,” Maia Sandu wrote on her social media account X.

The head of the neighboring state stressed that Russia bears sole responsibility for the destabilization in the region.

Moldovan authorities are currently working around the clock to minimize the impact of the emergency power outage on residential consumers.

As a reminder, Russian troops carried out another combined attack on Ukraine, using strike drones and cruise missiles.

Russian troops also launched a massive attack on the Dnipropetrovsk region.
