The EU is preparing its 21st package of sanctions against Russia: banks and the shadow fleet are in the crosshairs
Ukraine is working with its European partners on the 21st package of EU sanctions against Russia, which will focus primarily on the financial sector and the shadow fleet.
This was announced by Vladislav Vlasyuk, the President’s Representative on Sanctions Policy.
According to him, the new package may include Russian banks, payment systems, crypto exchanges, stablecoin services, currency exchange platforms, and other financial settlement instruments that help circumvent restrictions.
The introduction of sanctions against vessels and assets linked to the illegal export of Ukrainian grain from temporarily occupied territories is also under discussion.
Separately, Ukraine is promoting a mechanism that would allow partners not only to detain vessels of the Russian shadow fleet but also to seize them based on international legal procedures.
According to Vlasyuk, the European Commission has responded positively to most of Ukraine’s proposals.
