The EU is preparing new visa restrictions for Russian citizens

The European Union is developing new entry restrictions for certain categories of Russian citizens. Specifically, this applies to Russian military personnel who participated in the war against Ukraine.

European Commission spokesperson Markus Lampert announced this during a briefing in Brussels.

According to him, the entry ban on former Russian combatants is part of the proposed 21st package of sanctions against Russia. At the same time, the European Commission is also working on specific targeted visa restrictions in response to security threats arising from hostile actions by third countries.

These changes are being considered as part of the revision of the EU Visa Code, which is scheduled to be completed early next year.

The European Commission has not yet disclosed details regarding the mechanism for identifying individuals who will be subject to the future restrictions.

Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the European Union is proposing to ban entry for anyone who served in the Russian armed forces after the start of the full-scale war against Ukraine.

“Europe will be off-limits to anyone who participated in the invasion,” she emphasized.

Ukraine has introduced a new package of sanctions against Russian commanders who directed missile strikes on Ukrainian cities, as well as against ships providing military logistics to Russia.

Ukraine has rejected the idea of “associated EU membership without voting rights, which had been discussed in European political circles. Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that such a format is unfair and does not correspond to Ukraine’s role in European security.
