Estonia will help Latvia combat illegal migration
During a two-day visit to Latvia, Estonian Minister of the Interior Igor Taro expressed his country’s readiness to support its neighbor in the fight against illegal migration.
The meetings also focused on cooperation between Estonia and Latvia in the fight against organized crime and cross-border drug trafficking.
According to Taro, Latvia is one of Estonia’s most important partners in the field of security.
“Latvia is not only Estonia’s closest neighbor but also one of our most reliable allies. Cooperation between our law enforcement agencies is practical and effective, and is based on mutual trust and shared goals,” the minister said.
He familiarized himself with the situation regarding border security along the Latvian-Belarusian border. According to Taro, compared to Estonia, the situation for Latvians is significantly more tense, and combating illegal border crossings has already become routine.
“Latvia’s experience in countering malicious attacks is invaluable, and our police colleagues draw on it from time to time when we send our personnel to assist them in stopping particularly serious hostile initiatives. This cooperation will continue,” said Taro.
