Estonia is stepping up security measures and deploying anti-drone systems

Estonia has begun installing the first fixed systems to track drones along its border with Russia. The devices are already operational in several areas and are set to become part of a large nationwide surveillance network. This is part of a gradual effort to strengthen airspace control in border regions due to the growing risk of incidents involving drones. This was reported by ERR.

In southeastern Estonia, the first stationary systems that detect and track drones have already been deployed at several border sections, and these installations are not merely test units but are already fully operational, as confirmed by the country’s authorities.

The Estonian Ministry of the Interior notes that this is just the start of a major program, as they plan to deploy such systems along all land border sections within the year to create a continuous airspace surveillance network covering the entire border and inland regions where necessary. Minister of the Interior Igor Taro emphasized that the decision was not made by chance, but as a response to real risks that have already manifested in the region and the need to be prepared for situations involving drones that may pose a threat.

The ministry adds that in areas where fixed systems have not yet been installed or where additional monitoring is needed, mobile units from the police and border guard service will be deployed; these can be quickly moved to different areas depending on the situation.

The procurement of new equipment is also already underway, and according to the department, preparatory work is proceeding on schedule or even ahead of schedule, which should accelerate the deployment of a comprehensive border surveillance system.

Estoniahas responded to Russia’s accusations of harassment of Russians.
