Estonia is demanding that Russia restore the destroyed memorial

Estonia has reacted strongly to the dismantling in Russia of a memorial to the victims of Soviet repression in Tomsk and the destruction of memorials to Estonians who perished. Tallinn stated that this is not merely an act of destruction, but an attempt to rewrite history and devalue the memory of millions of victims. The country demands that Russia restore the memorial complex. He wrote about this in H.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna strongly condemned the dismantling of the memorial to victims of Soviet repression in Tomsk, Russia, including the removal of memorials to Estonians, and called on Russia to restore the destroyed memorial complex.

According to the foreign minister, the closure of the memorial and the dismantling of the “Stone of Sorrow” are a deliberate attempt to erase historical memory and silence the tragedy of millions of people who suffered from Soviet repression. He emphasized that such actions do not change the past, but demonstrate an attitude toward it. In a post on social media platform X, Tsahkna stated: “This act is an insult to Estonians and all those who suffered under Soviet terror. Distorting history and dismantling memorials will not change the past—it only exposes the Kremlin’s contempt for the truth and human dignity.”

Separately, the minister emphasized that Estonia demands the full restoration of the memorial complex and the return of the destroyed memorials. According to him, this is not only a matter of historical memory but also of respect for human dignity and the victims of political repression.

Officials in Tallinn note that such actions by Russia only heighten tensions and highlight differences in approaches to historical memory between the countries.

Estonia’s Ambassador to Ukraine, Anneli Kolk, also stated that reports of an alleged threat of a Russian invasion of the border town of Narva are part of the Kremlin’s information campaign.
