The European Commission has rejected the idea of easing sanctions against Iran — Euractiv
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that she does not currently support easing sanctions against Iran. This refers to a proposal that called for a possible relaxation of restrictions in exchange for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. Officials in Brussels consider such an idea premature.
She made this statement during a visit to Berlin, according to Euractiv.
Von der Leyen’s statement came after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz proposed a gradual easing of sanctions against Iran, provided the regime is ready to conclude a “comprehensive agreement.”
"It is too early to lift sanctions against Iran in exchange for opening the Strait of Hormuz," the European Commission President believes.
In her view, lifting the sanctions would be premature.
“There is a reason why sanctions have been imposed on Iran, [namely] its behavior toward its own people. The Iranian regime has killed at least 17,000 young people this year. It is the suppression of human rights, and in particular women’s rights in Iran, that led to the imposition of sanctions,” she emphasized.
Von der Leyen added that lifting sanctions would require "fundamental changes in Iran."
The European Commissionis discussing new models for Ukraine’s gradual integration into the EU.
Ukraine hopes that the European Union will open all six negotiation clusters regarding the country’s accession this year and also anticipates the possibility of closing at least one of them by the end of the year.
Ukraine may temporarily forgo some of the benefits of EU membership to accelerate the accession process. Taras Kachka noted that such a step would help Ukraine integrate into the EU more quickly.
