Europe has released a map of night trains for 2026

Europe has released a map of night trains for 2026

A new useful tool for travelers has been launched in Europe—an interactive map of all night trains scheduled to run in 2026, allowing users to view the entire network of night train routes across the continent in one place.

The resource was created to simplify travel planning, as night trains are increasingly becoming an alternative to air travel: people can depart in the evening and wake up in another city without losing a day’s worth of travel time.

The interactive map displays all of Europe’s regular night routes in the form of a transportation map and provides access to a database with details on each trip, including booking information and available travel options.

Separately, on the Back-on-Track website, which created this map, you can find additional recommendations for passengers and explanations regarding changes to the night train network.

In 2026, new connections will be introduced, including the European Sleeper Paris–Berlin line, new routes by the Polish carrier PKP between Poland, Prague, and Munich, as well as the planned Brussels–Milan route.

At the same time, some night trains are being discontinued—specifically, several popular ÖBB Nightjet routes, as well as the long Stockholm–Narvik route, which was considered one of the longest night routes in Europe. Some routes are being shortened; for example, the Bratislava–Split route will now depart from Vienna.

Experts attribute the growing interest in night trains to the fact that air travel worldwide has become less reliable, while the very nature of night travel allows passengers to save time and combine travel with sleep. “The biggest obstacle for night trains in Europe is the lack of investment in rolling stock. There is demand, but without modernization, it is impossible to unlock the market’s potential,” noted Back-on-Track Chairman Yuri Mayer. At the same time, the infrastructure problem remains: track repairs often affect night train schedules and cause delays.

Project organizers expect that by 2032, the situation in Europe will change thanks to the modernization of railway infrastructure, which will make night routes more reliable and faster. “The new Brussels–Milan line could be significant, but the route through Switzerland will be a serious challenge for operators,” added Back-on-Track expert Giovanni Antoniazzi.

According to experts’ forecasts, night trains are gradually becoming a viable alternative to air travel, especially on medium- and long-haul routes across Europe. This was reported by Euronews.
