Europol has detained suspects in the smuggling of illegal migrants
Europol, the European police agency, conducted an operation against networks involved in the illegal transport of people. As a result of the operation, law enforcement officials detained three individuals suspected of being involved with Syrian smuggling groups.
The operation was aimed at combating organized migrant smuggling networks. An investigation is currently underway into the suspects’ activities and their possible ties to a broader network.
According to Europol, as a result of a coordinated international operation, law enforcement authorities detained three individuals in Germany and Serbia.
The operation brought together law enforcement agencies from Germany and Serbia as part of a task force coordinated by Europol. Investigators focused on members of two interconnected Syrian groups believed to have organized the illegal smuggling of more than 900 migrants into the European Union.
The first suspect, arrested in Germany, is a 26-year-old Syrian national who is believed to have organized the illegal transport of at least 125 migrants on five separate trips since October 2024.
Serbian authorities also arrested two members of separate human smuggling networks in Belgrade based on international arrest warrants issued by Germany.
In addition to the arrests, law enforcement officials also conducted six searches in the Saarbrücken area of Germany and seized evidence that is currently undergoing forensic analysis.
During the investigations, Europol uncovered two Syrian networks that were operating simultaneously along migration routes through the Central Mediterranean and the Western Balkans.
According to reports, one network may have organized dangerous sea crossings from Libya to the Italian island of Lampedusa in overcrowded and unseaworthy boats, carrying up to 61 migrants without life jackets or other safety equipment.
It is believed that the migrants, mostly Syrian nationals, paid between 6,500 and 7,800 euros per trip, after which they were transported to Germany via secondary smuggling networks.
According to investigators’ estimates, this network alone may have earned at least 875,000 euros in illegal profits.
The second network, it is reported, operated from Serbia, coordinating the movement of migrants to Germany and other Western European countries. It is alleged that the network charged fees ranging from 2,000 to 10,000 euros per person for the illegal smuggling of primarily Syrian citizens from Serbia through Hungary and from Bosnia and Herzegovina through Croatia.
It is noted that from there, the migrants were transported in passenger cars, minibuses, and trucks through Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, or Slovakia before reaching their final destinations.
