Fico is asking to fly to Moscow via Poland after the Baltic states refused
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has sent a request to Poland seeking permission for his plane to fly to Moscow to participate in the events on May 9.
Previously, similar requests from the head of the Slovak government were rejected by the Baltic states, according to PAP.
Polish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maciej Wiewiór confirmed receipt of an official request from the Slovak side. According to him, the Polish ministry is currently reviewing the request before providing a final response regarding the use of the country’s airspace.
Robert Fico plans to visit the Russian capital despite sanctions and restrictions in place within the European Union. Finding an alternative route through Poland became necessary after Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia closed their airspace to this flight.
The Slovak leader confirmed receiving the refusal, calling the actions of EU member states unprecedented, but assured that he would use an alternative route.
