Von der Leyen mentioned a possible date for Montenegro's accession to the EU

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that Montenegro could realistically become a member of the European Union as early as 2028. According to her, the country is making significant progress on reforms, and the integration process itself is gradually moving from plans to concrete steps.

The European Union has once again returned to the topic of enlargement in the Western Balkans, and this time the focus is on Montenegro, which Brussels considers one of the most advanced candidates for accession. This was stated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during a press conference in Tivat.

She emphasized that Montenegro’s accession to the EU in 2028 appears entirely achievable if the country continues its reforms and stays on a European course. “The EU’s Growth Plan is very important: we are opening up part of the single market to companies from the region, and they gain the opportunity to expand their businesses and, along with that, attract investment,” von der Leyen said.

According to her, the integration of the Western Balkans is not just a political declaration, but a long-term strategy that involves the gradual opening of the EU single market to countries in the region.

She also mentioned the issues of abolishing roaming charges and economic integration, emphasizing that this process is “merit-based,” meaning that every step forward depends on the reforms implemented. “This summit was marked by determination and commitment… I believe that the goal of Montenegro’s accession to the EU in 2028 is achievable. The enlargement process is about turning a dream into reality,” the European Commission President stated.

She also noted that the pace of reforms in Montenegro is making a positive impression on European partners and could serve as an example for other countries in the region that also aspire to EU membership. This was reported by RTCG.
