On September 16, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated during her annual address to the European Parliament in Strasbourg that the EU should take a more cautious approach to the development of artificial intelligence. Against the backdrop of rapid progress in the field of AI, she called on the European Union to adopt a more measured approach.
Von der Leyen emphasized that Europe must harness the potential of artificial intelligence while also taking into account the associated risks. In particular, she noted that the technology’s development should not outpace the EU’s ability to establish the necessary rules and safeguards.
“The models being developed today will enable cyberattacks on a scale we previously considered impossible. And soon they will fall into the hands of adversaries who view the world very differently from us,” the EC President stated.
The remarks were made as part of her annual State of the EU address. von der Leyen also outlined the European Union’s broader strategy for technological competitiveness and the need to set its own rules for new technologies.
