In Ghana, parliamentary minority accuses AMA of discriminating against Konkomba
In Ghana, the parliamentary minority from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) of selectively marking structures for demolition in the Konkomba yam market area. A 24-hour market is planned to be built on the site, MyJoyOnline reports.
Parliamentary minority's position
Dominic Nitiwul, the Member of Parliament for Bimbilla and former defence minister who led an inspection by minority representatives, said that almost all structures marked for demolition are located in areas where members of the Konkomba community live. According to him, structures were not marked in other parts of the site where Konkomba do not live.
Nitiwul also claims that all trading premises at the Konkomba yam market have been marked for the future project. He called on President John Mahama to intervene and halt the planned demolition. The parliamentary minority stressed that it does not oppose the development of the area but demands that the interests of residents and traders who may be affected by the project be taken into account.

Accra mayor's response
Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey rejected claims that AMA is deliberately acting against the Konkomba community. According to him, before the planned redevelopment began, the assembly contacted leaders of the Konkomba and other communities working at the market.
Allotey said that he had visited the Konkomba market more than 15 times and held meetings with traders before implementing plans to create a 24-hour market.
