Japan's Mitsubishi Motors has unveiled the new generation of its Pajero SUV, resuming production of the model in the country after a seven-year hiatus. The new vehicle is positioned as the brand's flagship SUV.
The company plans to first launch the new model in Thailand, followed by Japan and Australia by March 2027. After that, starting in the next fiscal year, Mitsubishi intends to begin selling this SUV in about 100 countries, including those in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
Since the debut of the first generation in 1982, Mitsubishi Motors has produced more than 3.29 million Pajero vehicles worldwide. The SUV earned a reputation as a reliable off-road vehicle after winning its class the following year at one of the largest rally competitions, according to the report.
Mitsubishi Motors Corp. President Keisuke Kishihara stated that the Pajero model “has undergone radical changes in every aspect.”
“We have combined the best technologies from Mitsubishi Motors and put everything we have into this project,” Kishihara said.
The automaker is positioning the updated model as a key growth driver as part of its medium-term business plan through fiscal year 2029. Mitsubishi expects the Pajero to help the company achieve its goal of increasing domestic sales by 50% compared to the level in fiscal year 2024, to approximately 180,000 vehicles by fiscal year 2030.
In the future, the company plans to release two smaller versions of the Pajero.
