Michigan Republican Congresswoman Lisa McClain, in an interview with CBS News, supported US President Donald Trump’s tariff policy toward Canada. She said the purpose of these measures is to level the playing field in trade and support American farmers.

McClain acknowledged that tariffs are associated with certain negative consequences, but said she trusts Trump and does not believe he would do anything that would harm Americans in the long term. She argued that Canada has imposed 250% tariffs on certain US dairy and poultry products since the 1990s.

Tariffs and Michigan farmers

Host Margaret Brennan cited an estimate by the National Taxpayers Union Foundation that the Trump administration’s tariffs since January 2025 have cost Michigan $23 billion, or $5,619 per household. She also said that Canada is to impose retaliatory tariffs on aluminum, dairy products, steel and household appliances on Tuesday.

McClain said that farmers in her district view the president’s efforts to change trade relations with Canada positively. According to her, the United States has a $60 billion trade deficit with Canada, and Trump has concluded 20 new trade agreements.

Position on Max Miller

During the conversation, McClain also commented on Republican Ohio Congressman Max Miller, whom, according to Brennan, two former partners have accused of domestic violence. McClain said she hopes these accusations are untrue and that the process should be allowed to play out.

She noted that Miller is currently the Republican Party’s candidate despite calls from some Republicans for him to leave the race. Brennan also reported that the National Republican Congressional Committee announced plans to spend nearly half a million dollars to support Miller.
