France 24 devoted an episode to the state of democracy and media freedom in Italy
On its program *Europe Rendezvous*, France 24 examined the state of democratic institutions, media freedom, and the situation of migrants and women seeking abortions in Italy under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government. The program’s producers noted that, ahead of the 2027 elections, her government is accused of seeking to increase its influence over the judiciary, the media, and the electoral system.
In the report, Renaud Lefort profiled Meloni—the first woman to serve as Italy’s head of government. The journalist spoke with her longtime mentor, Gianfranco Fini, whom France 24 described as a key figure in the history of Italy’s far right.
The program also featured Paolo Borchia, a Member of the European Parliament representing the “Patriots for Europe” group and the “League” party, which is part of Meloni’s coalition. The episode discussed whether the League’s participation in the government has affected its reputation and support in the polls.

Dario Nardella, a Member of the European Parliament from the Group of Socialists and Democrats and a member of the opposition, offered a critical assessment of the Meloni government’s four years in office, particularly its economic policies and its use of funds from the EU’s post-pandemic recovery fund. Italy was the largest recipient of these funds.
A separate report focused on media freedom in the country. France 24 reported on the resignation of the cross-party parliamentary committee that oversees the public broadcaster RAI, as well as Italy’s 56th-place ranking in the Press Freedom Index compiled by Reporters Without Borders.
