France is returning the aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle" to Toulon
France has decided to return the aircraft carrier *Charles de Gaulle* to its home port in Toulon after nearly two months in the Strait of Hormuz. Along with the ship, the configuration of France’s naval presence in the region is changing, although some forces remain deployed.
French President Emmanuel Macron announced this, emphasizing that partnership and security operations in the region will continue even after the aircraft carrier’s return.
The French aircraft carrier “Charles de Gaulle” is concluding its nearly two-month deployment in the Strait of Hormuz and is heading to its home port in Toulon, though part of France’s naval mission in the region will continue its operations.
In a post on social media, Macron noted that the aircraft carrier’s return does not mean a complete withdrawal of France’s presence in the region. “The aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle will return to its home port in Toulon, while our mine countermeasures assets and their escort vessels will remain deployed and ready to cooperate with our partners,” the French president wrote. According to sources, European countries continue to coordinate efforts to ensure the safety of shipping in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. France and the United Kingdom lead a coalition of more than 40 countries that have committed to maintaining stability and securing maritime routes in the region.
Following the recent truce between the U.S. and Iran, commercial shipping volumes through the strait have increased, which has partially eased tensions; however, the military presence remains an important deterrent. France deployed its only aircraft carrier off the coast of the Arabian Peninsula back in May. Should the situation escalate, the ship could be rapidly redeployed to the Strait of Hormuz within a few days. In addition to the aircraft carrier, other French military assets were active in the region, including minesweepers, which remain on standby for further operations. This was reported by French President Emmanuel Macron and also noted by Bloomberg.
