French prosecutors call for the reinvestigation of the case against Besson — Le Monde
The French prosecutor's office has officially filed a motion with the court to reopen criminal proceedings against renowned film director Luc Besson.
He is accused of raping actress Sand Van Roy, and the results of DNA testing have given new impetus to the case.
According to Le Monde, the Paris Court of Appeal plans to consider this request as early as June 2.
The new evidence may corroborate the actress’s testimony, which was previously deemed insufficient to proceed with the case.
The conflict began back in 2018, when Sand Van Roy, who appeared in cameo roles in the films “Taxi 5” and “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets,” filed a complaint. She claims that the director forced her to have sexual contact at the Bristol Hotel.
According to the actress, during a meeting at the hotel, she drank a cup of tea, after which she suddenly lost consciousness.
Van Roy stated that the director systematically exploited his influential professional position over the two years of their relationship.
The case’s journey through the courts has been long and complicated. Initially, the prosecutor’s office refused to open an investigation following a preliminary review; however, the case was later reopened but closed in 2021 due to lack of evidence.
Last year, the appeals court again rejected the appeal against the termination of the investigation, but the current new circumstances have forced law enforcement to change their position.
This gives the actress a chance for a retrial of the charges in court.
