Ghana plans to establish a $50 million skills university — MyJoyOnline
Ghana plans to establish a university for developing practical skills for young people. $50 million from Germany’s $132 million support package is to be allocated for its construction, MyJoyOnline reports.
University funding
The initiative was announced by Ghana’s Minister of State at the Office of the President, responsible for special presidential initiatives, Dr Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo. According to him, the new institution will focus on developing young people’s practical skills and is intended to help narrow the gap between skills acquisition and employment.
Pelpuo said that $50 million would be used to build the university. He called it Ghana’s first university specifically designed for skills development.

Practical experience in companies
The remaining $82 million is planned to be directed toward a programme for young people who have already acquired certain skills. They will be sent to companies to gain practical workplace experience.
According to the minister, the Ghanaian government will provide programme participants with monthly financial support while they work with companies. This is intended to allow them to improve their skills without additional costs for employers. Companies will be able to hire participants if they consider them valuable to their work; others, according to Pelpuo, will have improved skills and experience that may help them start working independently.
