UN Secretary-General Guterres and President Pezeshkian discuss Strait of Hormuz — Anadolu Agency

In Washington, United States, UN Secretary-General António Guterres met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and stressed the need to resolve the conflict in the Middle East through dialogue and negotiations, Anadolu Agency reports.

Call for diplomacy

In a UN statement, it was noted that Guterres stressed the urgent need to resolve the conflict with full respect for international law, including the rights and freedoms of navigation in and around the Strait of Hormuz. The Secretary-General also reaffirmed the UN's commitment to supporting all diplomatic efforts.

Tehran's proposal

The meeting took place amid Iran's statement on a seven-day plan to cease hostilities and open the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told journalists that the proposal had been conveyed to Washington through Qatar. According to him, the strait could be opened within seven days if the necessary conditions are met.

At the time of reporting, the United States had not publicly responded to the proposal. According to the agency, the United States and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28, and Tehran said that thousands of people had been killed. In response, Iran carried out missile and drone attacks in the region and effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, which is an important route for energy supplies.
