Bećirović, Chair of the Presidency, says world has failed to act on Gaza — Anadolu Agency

Denis Bećirović, Chair of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, said during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, United States, that the international community had not given an adequate response to what he described as the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza. He called on states not to remain passive in the face of large-scale injustice, Anadolu Agency reports.

Bećirović drew parallels between contemporary conflicts and the crimes that Bosnia and Herzegovina endured in the 1990s. According to him, the rise of authoritarian populism, the war in Ukraine, suffering in Gaza, regional wars in the Gulf area and the catastrophic situation in Sudan have caused a deep crisis marked by fear and instability.

He recalled that from 1992 to 1995, Bosnia and Herzegovina suffered aggression, crimes against humanity and the genocide of Bosniaks. According to Bećirović, the highest international judicial bodies established that genocide took place on the country’s territory, making it the only state in Europe to have experienced genocide after World War II.

Call not to glorify war criminals

Bećirović separately mentioned Ratko Mladić, who was convicted of genocide and war crimes. In 2017, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia sentenced him to life imprisonment. According to the agency, Mladić died in August this year in The Hague, where he had been serving his sentence.

Bećirović said that institutional attempts to glorify convicted war criminals are unacceptable and called on global actors to take concrete measures against their official commemoration.
