SK Group Chairman Appeals Ruling on Record-Breaking Asset Settlement

Choi Tae-won, chairman of South Korea’s SK Group, has filed an appeal against the Seoul High Court’s ruling in his divorce case with Ro So-yeon, the former director of Art Center Nabi. The dispute over the division of assets worth 944 billion won, or $668 million, will be heard by the Supreme Court of South Korea, according to the Korea Herald.

The deadline for filing an appeal expired at midnight on Friday. If neither party had appealed the decision, the Seoul High Court’s ruling would have taken effect.

In July, the court ordered Choe to pay Ro 944 billion won in cash. He must also pay approximately 129.3 million won in compensation for each day of delay, starting from the day after the ruling takes effect until the amount is paid in full. This is the largest sum ever awarded in a divorce case in South Korea.

The legal dispute between Choe and Ro began in 2015, when Choe publicly announced the birth of a child out of wedlock and sought divorce mediation. No agreement was reached at that time. In 2018, he filed for divorce, and Ro filed a counterclaim in December 2019.
